Folks,

Right now, I’m working with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to bring legislation to the floor soon that will legalize marijuana and finally begin to right the wrongdoings of decades of failed, discriminatory anti-marijuana policies.

Even though white and Black Americans use marijuana at similar rates, Black Americans are four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana-related offenses and six times more likely to be incarcerated. The War on Drugs continues to be a war on people. It’s destroyed lives, broken up families and communities, and resulted in countless unjust arrests that too often stay with people for the rest of their lives as they are denied opportunities in employment, housing, and basic social services.

That’s why Leader Schumer, Senator Ron Wyden, and I are working together on the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act to change the antiquated, cruel federal marijuana policies on the books and ensure the federal government is leading this effort at restorative justice.

Cannabis reform is bipartisan and we have a chance at passing our bill through the Senate this year, but I need your voice to show that there is strong public support. Will you add your name as a citizen cosponsor of our Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act today? [[link removed]]

Our bill will expunge non-violent federal records of marijuana crimes, remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act , and will tax marijuana and direct those resources to communities most impacted by the War on Drugs.

At this point in history, the legalization of marijuana is a bipartisan issue. So far, 37 states have legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes and 18 states have legalized marijuana for both medicinal and recreational purposes, from Massachusetts to Alaska. And yet, less than 5% of cannabis businesses are owned by Black people — those who have been most marginalized should have a fair shot at participating in the legal cannabis industry.

It’s time the federal government rectifies years of wrongdoing and harm to communities and people of color and keeps pace with policies at the state level.
