PROGRAM UPDATES:

Marissa is a 21-year-old Colombian asylum seeker, who spent 3 months inside the Imperial Regional Detention Center, and our most recent Familias Reunidas bond fund recipient. She was fleeing violence in her home country, and upon her release was reunited with her stepfather. She shares the following message:

“We don't know how to repay you all for such kindness. We can only pray that God continues to bless you. I am very grateful to the people who support this program, they really are a great support. Speaking from my personal experience, I am very grateful for the help that was given to me. Right now I am so happy and surrounded by my family, thank you very much to all the people who are part of this.”

Due to the ongoing war and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, we have received and influx of bond applications of both Russian and Ukrainian refugees through our Families Reunidas program. We really need your support for covering bail, every dollar goes towards freeing someone from for-profit detention. Just last week we helped George, a 30-year old fleeing Russia for political reasons, who spent 3 months inside the Imperial Regional Detention Center.

While we are committed to assisting all migrants and asylum seekers, and we are glad this crisis is receiving the international attention and assistance it deserves, we continue to advocate and assist black and brown migrants who are disproportionately affected by the immigration system. Volviendo A Casa:
(New Program "Returning Home")

José Enrique was 22 years old and was originally from Chenalhó, an indigenous town in the highlands of Chiapas. He spoke Spanish and Tzotzil. He came from a very humble family, with few resources. He was a farmer and was forced by economic necessity to try to migrate to the US in search of a source of income. He passed away in the desert on February 19. He was single but had a 4-year-old daughter. He is survived by his daughter, older sister, and his parents who are completely devastated by this unexpected event. The wakes take on a very deep and special meaning in the indigenous towns of the highlands of Chiapas, where they usually last more than a week. Through our Volviendo a Casa program, we were able to assist this family to give Jose the final goodbye, and we received the following message from his older sister:

Juana: "Good evening, I write to you to thank you for what you have done for mi little brother and my family doesn't know how to thank you. From the bottom of our hearts, we are sending prayers and blessings from Chenalho, Chiapas (MX) to you and to all of your supporters. Thank you on behalf of my little brother Jose Enrique Gomez Ortiz."

Thanks to your support we have not only several ongoing SIJS(Special Immigrant Juvenile Status) cases but even naturalization processes for the children in our Green Cards for Kids program! Some of the kids in this program have even faced or are facing deportation proceedings, but we are committed not only to stopping them but giving them a rightful status in this country.

The Water Drop team had a long hike this past weekend, as they traveled through a corridor which is one of the regular drop routes with the longest distance. Warm temperatures have been moving into the desert, and the Water Drop team has started leaving supplies to assist in personal protection from the sun and heat for those crossing through

Templo Embajadores de Jesus is the largest shelter we support of the 17 in our Shelter Aid program, and it remains at max capacity due to Title 42, MPP, and the forced termination of El Chaparral encampment. This shelter supports hundreds of migrants daily with food, housing, and other emergent needs. The 2-Year Anniversary of Title 42:

Monday, March 21st marked the 2 year anniversary of the racist and harmful policy of Title 42:

SDIRC calls on the Biden Administration to end Title 42 TODAY. This is a racist policy implemented by the Trump Administration and carried forward by the Biden Administration. Title 42 continues to inflict significant harm against black and brown asylum seekers.

I have heard from thousands of asylum seekers risking their lives crossing the desert and the ocean to seek a life of prosperity and safety in a country that is doing everything it can to keep them out and keep them in a perilous limbo at detention centers without any hope for an asylum hearing.

The irony is that thousands of people cross the southern border every day to spend money at shopping malls, wineries and on vacations yet this policy prevents people who are fleeing violence and poverty to find safety and secure their future in this country which was built on the labor and the hope of immigrants, migrants and asylum seekers.

All these families want is to present themselves at the port of entry and to have their asylum cases heard with all due process. All they want is a beacon of hope and an opportunity to survive. What they are getting now is a policy that is designed to keep them away from the promise that this country is supposed to symbolize. We must end Title 42 today.

Black Lives Matter:
We have raised $1,500 through our Black Lives Matter shirts thanks to your amazing support! Border Angels is matching this to donate a total of $3,000 to The DeDe McClure Bail Fund. This fund was created in the summer of 2018 out of a need to free San Diegans held captive by our racist and predatory bail system. Immigration activists call for end of Trump-era asylum order still in effect:
Activists on both sides of the border commemorated the second anniversary of Title 42 Monday with demonstrations demanding the end of the controversial Trump-era policy.

Title 42 was first implemented in March 2020 and allows border officials to use the pandemic as a justification for turning away asylum seekers at the southern border without a hearing before an immigration judge.

To date, asylum seekers have been turned back more than 1.2 million times via Title 42, according to data from Customs and Border Protection (CPB).

With protests on both sides of the border, migrants and activists ask to eliminate Title 42
Monday's End Title 42 manifestations were held on both sides of the border, both in Tijuana and in San Diego. With the 2nd anniversary of this harmful and deadly policy, migrants and activists alike call on the Biden administration to end this Trump-era policy.

Medical experts concur that this policy has no real effect on public health, especially as COVID restrictions and mask mandates have begun to be lifted. This policy directly targets black and brown migrants, effectively shutting them out or deporting them to their home country while exercising their LEGAL right to ask for asylum.

The Consortium for Immigrant Rights in San Diego called the ordinance requiring business licenses and municipal permits for vendors in public areas racist.
The municipal council approved the ordinance by eight votes in favor and one against on Tuesday. If you want to sell on beaches, tourist corridors, and other meeting places, you must have a business license and the corresponding permits.

The consortium's executive director, Dulce García, said that "many of our immigrant families turned to street vending to survive. However, with this arrangement, their ability to earn a living is seriously threatened." She lamented, "the city of San Diego only listens to business owners and beach communities instead of protecting street vendors under state law."
