John, when Russia invaded Ukraine, the city of Irpin, located just 13 miles from the capital of Kyiv, quickly became the site of unspeakable violence.
Alina*, her husband and their children spent three days hiding in a basement while war raged above their heads. Alina shared their fear with us: "My children spent three days in a basement, just so they could live."
Finally, a friend managed to help Alina and her children escape and make their way to the Romanian border. Her husband stayed behind.
After their harrowing journey, they stayed in a temporary shelter for refugees in Romania, where the children found solace in one of Save the Children’s child-friendly spaces. There, they could play games, make friends and receive the psychosocial support needed to begin recovering from the trauma of the last few weeks.

Now, Alina and her children are on their way to Spain, where they’ll stay with extended family. But so many other families are still facing danger and uncertainty, leaving many children’s lives and futures at risk.
