This week Americans eagerly watched the confirmation hearings for a new justice to our nation's highest court. And what they saw on their screens was shameful.

They saw relentless Republican attacks on Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, including on her role as a public defender, and the grandstanding of a handful of GOP Senators who chose to attack her without merit and lob outrageous accusations that only demeaned themselves. Their performance was not about justice or our highest court — it was about political ambition and press coverage.

Through it all Judge Jackson’s brilliance stood out. She did not back down. She stood up for the law and the Constitution. She did it with grace and grit. And in the process she showed Americans why President Biden selected her to sit on the Supreme Court at this critical moment in our history — and why she belongs there.

An independent judiciary is one of the hallmarks of a vibrant democracy and something that separates us from the Putin's of this world. We need to preserve it and protect it from those who seek to undermine the Constitutional protections it is meant to safeguard.

I will be fighting for Judge Jackson until this process is over. And we all need to be fighting to ensure that we have a Senate going forward that will vote to confirm highly qualified jurists, like Judge Jackson, to our federal courts. Because, without them, we can't fully protect the rights and democracy we hold dear.

I'm ready to see Supreme Court history be made. How about you?

Onwards,

Chris Van Hollen
