ATU 689/Transdev Strike Update: Day 28
Today marks 28 days on strike for ATU Local 689 Metrobus workers who work for Transdev at WMATA's Cinder Bed Road garage. "We've got two huge days ahead of us," says ATU's Todd Brogan. Bargaining will finally resume today and tomorrow, with a federal mediator on hand. Also today, the lunchtime picket will be joined by AFM musicians. "Should be a fun one," says Brogan. Tuesday, they were joined by a group of AFA-CWA and APALA members on the WMATA HQ picket line (photo). "You're welcome to join us any day!" Brogan urges. Check here for the [link removed] schedule. On Thursday, at the next WMATA Board meeting, DC Jobs with Justice is organizing supporters to pack the room, and ATU 689 will be bringing the strikers along. Check [link removed] here for details. On Monday, ATU released the strike anthem, written by striker Otis Price. It's already gotten shared across the globe, but you can view it and share it here (see video). Nurses vote union in West Virginia
Nearly 1,000 Registered Nurses now have the ability to negotiate for safe staffing and improved patient care at Cabell Huntington Hospital after voting to organize with SEIU 1199. It's one of the biggest organizing victories since West Virginia became a Right-to-Work state, and 1199 said that "nurses are sending a resounding message to working people across West Virginia that forming a union is the best way to shift the balance of power away from corporations and toward the people." The win came just a little over a month after the nurses notified the hospital of the intent to organize in early October. "The nurses in our community know by uniting together, we can stand up for our patients, our families, and our community," said Joyce Gibson, Regional Director for SEIU District 1199 WV/KY/OH.

NPEU charges National Center for Transgender Equality with firing workers for organizing
The Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) has filed charges against the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) for firing all the workers in the bargaining unit, in what NPEU says is "retaliation against the staff asking for voluntary recognition of their union." The union adds that "By busting their staff's union and retaliating against collective action, (NCTE has) done a disservice to their organization's own mission." Noting that one in six transgender workers have lost a job due to discrimination, NPEU says that NCTE "has not only taken away the staff's livelihood, but has hurt the movement for transgender equality."

Union Voice/Readers Write: Union Label memories
"I wanted to thank you for the ride down memory lane with the video in [link removed] today's Union City," writes Meghan Newkirk. "My mother worked at IBEW, as did my grandfather. Now I work for Ullico. We've been a union family for generations. I joke that `look for the union label' was my cradle song. It was nice to hear it again."

Today's Labor Quote: Norman Thomas

"I am not a champion of lost causes, but the champion of causes not yet won."

The American socialist leader was born on this date in 1884.
