We had some big victories in March. But there were a few stinging losses,
too. And it’s important that we don’t gloss over that fact, because there
are some critical lessons to be learned.

It’s also a sobering reminder of the uphill battles we’ve been facing and
are going to KEEP facing. We will need each other to overcome them.

The fact of the matter is that in places where Real Justice-endorsed
candidates WON, it was because they out-organized their opponents and ran
on a bold vision. Now they will be able to use the power of their office
to stop police violence and help communities.

But in the places where the candidates lost — like Lee Merritt’s race for
Attorney General — those campaigns were badly out-spent.

It’s an issue we run into all the time: we have many uphill battles to
face. And we will have to work THAT much harder to defeat our well-funded
opponents and pass the changes that our communities so urgently need.

The unfortunate reality is that our work — both electorally and on the
issues — can only succeed if we’re well-funded.

It is true that we consistently punch WAY above our weight class.

And we’re able to do a whole lot of important work because of our amazing
volunteers, donors, and supporters.

But there are so many more elections to win and legislative battles to
fight. And as this last month has shown, it’s impossible to win every
fight as the underdog.

So it’s on all of us to take pride in the victories we HAVE earned, and
double-down where we came up short.
