As you saw during this year’s legislative session, the Republican leadership wasted no time attacking our rights, freedoms, and equality. On the first day of session, they introduced an extreme 15-week abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest. And from that first day to the last, we never stopped fighting back.
My Democratic colleagues and I exposed this ban for what it really is – a politically-driven attack on a person’s right to make decisions about their body and their future that has nothing to do with health or safety.
We know this bill will cause unnecessary harm to Floridians, particularly people of color who already face inequitable access to healthcare along with those who live in rural areas or can’t afford to travel out of state for an abortion.
This session made it clear that the only way to fight back against attacks on our rights is to have people in power who will speak up against them.
Although the abortion ban is likely to be signed into law by the governor soon, the fight is far from over. We need to be prepared for what lies ahead, and that means winning this November and beyond.
