This week, Oklahoma took Texas’ draconian abortion law (SB 8) a step further by passing a TOTAL abortion ban that private citizens can enforce. Once again, a bounty has been placed over women’s heads, as this bill allows anyone (from an uber driver to an ex-partner to a neighbor) to SUE anyone involved in an abortion.

We understand there’s a lot happening in the news right now, but we are sending you this email because women are likely going to die as a result of these bans (which are largely written and implemented by majority-male legislatures).

These bans limit what doctors can do in the event of a life-threatening pregnancy, or complications that will cause harm to the mother. They restrict what women can do if they become pregnant under dangerous circumstances like an abusive partner or a preexisting health condition.

These abortion bans are dangerous and completely disregard the lived realities of women across the country. This is why we need equal representation in the rooms where decisions that affect women are being made.

Earlier this month, Kentucky State Senator and diagnostic radiologist Dr. Karen Berg gave an impassioned speech, calling out the absurdity of her fellow, mostly male, legislators’ votes on a topic they know so little about. Kentucky already has a trigger law to completely end access to abortions if Roe v. Wade is overturned. Still, they have introduced SB 321, which prohibits abortions after 15 weeks.

Senator Berg rightfully pointed out that she was the ONLY woman and the ONLY doctor on the committee. Here is a quick snippet of her powerful speech:

“I’m extraordinarily personally familiar with the development of a fetus in the womb, and for you to sit here and say that at 15 weeks a fetus has a functional heart, a four-chamber heart, that can survive on its own is fallacious. That is not true. There is no viability… For each and every one of my colleagues to be so willing to pass an aye vote when what you are doing is putting your finger, putting your knee, putting a gun to women’s heads ... You are killing women because abortion will continue. Women will continue to have efficacy over their body whether or not you make it legal.”

Yes, there are a lot of crises happening simultaneously across the globe right now – and they each deserve our attention and our concern. But we can't let MALE GOP LEGISLATORS pass these laws when they think we're not looking.

As Senator Berg pointed out, we need more women in the rooms where these decisions are being made. We are proud to endorse and support candidates who understand the urgency of this moment, and will fight to protect abortion access.
