Hello Somebody!

Over the past few days, I’ve been watching the confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. And I was particularly moved by her story about a Black woman — a stranger to her — recognizing that she was struggling and offering a kind word when it was needed most.

It was a powerful moment of solidarity, and it reminded me of a story from my time in college. I think it’s important, so I hope you’ll take the time to read on.

As you may know, I’m a first-generation college graduate. And as the oldest of seven siblings, it was not easy.

The first time I enrolled at Tri-C (Cuyahoga Community College for those of you not from here), I had to drop out to help take care of my family.

And because I didn’t formally withdraw from my classes, when I returned years later, my GPA had taken a dive.

When I tell you I wanted to turn around and walk right out of that building the moment I found out...

But I had an advisor — a woman named Iris Williams. She would not let me feel sorry for myself, and she sat me down at her desk and together we made a plan.

I made the Dean’s List every quarter after that, and eventually became a lecturer and then a tenured professor at Tri-C.

All that was possible because one person would not give up on me. A single gesture of solidarity can make a massive difference in someone’s life.

And that’s what we’re trying to do on this campaign — to stand in solidarity with working people, and tell them that they are not alone, and that together we have the power to change things.

Nothing difficult is ever achieved alone — and that includes winning a race for Congress. The truth is, the only way we’re going to have the resources to compete against the powerful special interests who want to stop us is with the support of a massive grassroots movement of conscious-minded people like you.
