Just a few days after winning my special election for the 40th state Senate district in 2017 – becoming the first Latina Democrat to serve in that chamber – I had the opportunity to visit Puerto Rico as it recovered from the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria.

I saw firsthand the strength and resilience of the Puerto Rican community. And my heart broke for the innocent families who lost everything in the storm, just to be cruelly neglected and ignored by the Trump administration and Republicans in Washington.

Throughout my career as a public servant, I have demonstrated a strong commitment to the Puerto Rican community in Florida. As Governor, I will be a steadfast ally for my Boricua brothers and sisters.

And in May, I plan on making an official visit to Puerto Rico, to hear their concerns, strengthen the connection between our two communities, and continue to empower Hispanic voices across the country.
