I started my professional career as a teacher in a predominantly immigrant program. I began learning about the world through the lens of personal experiences of the families I worked with. It is stories like these that inform and drive the work we do. 

I became involved with Alliance San Diego because I was moved by the impact and relationships Alliance was building in the community. Alliance San Diego stands for centering the power of the community to affect change. We work with families, students and community partners to provide tools so they can make the best decisions for their future and be a part of change. We do this through direct legal representation and through presentations on several topics including Know Your Rights, Undocu-Student Webinars and Immigration Remedies. 

I’m proud that Alliance San Diego’s legal services team is assisting the community and building relationships to build a better future. That’s how we all move forward. Together.

We believe that our children’s schools should be fully funded so that they have the opportunity to reach their full potential. In order for students to be successful, parents, teachers, staff and the community must look at the whole child and address the needs beyond learning. With a Community School model, students will receive access to healthcare, social development, mental health services and more. Alliance San Diego has been working in coalition to help put the community back in our schools. To create a hub where students, parents, community members and partners work together to support our city’s future leaders. The implementation of the Community Schools model is underway in San Diego. Five district schools will be selected in the coming days to pilot the program. 

We spoke truth to power — and we won! This month, a San Diego Superior Court judge sided with voters in the lawsuit we brought against the San Diego City Council. This case was about who has the power to decide an election. Does the City Council have the authority to change the election timeline? Or change the election process? Or change the election rules after the fact? The judge said no. Election integrity and voter trust are vitally important to ensure we have an inclusive democracy. Alliance San Diego will continue to fight for voters to ensure that all of us have a say in our future, and that voters decide elections, not politicians.

“I’ve been stopped every time I’ve gotten a new car.” That’s the statement of a Black  community member, who like many others, has been stopped by the San Diego Police Department for driving while Black. Racial bias is a problem in policing, and a proposed law called  Preventing Overpolicing Through Equitable Community Treatment (or PrOTECT) seeks to address the over-policing of our communities, especially Black, Latinx, Asian/Pacific Islander, and LGBTQ community members. The proposed ordinance, which will go to the San Diego City Council for a vote soon, would require San Diego police to have probable cause in order to stop someone, to ask for their identification, question or search an individual. It will also end stops for equipment violations that are often used as pretexts to harass drivers of color. Alliance San Diego continues to work with our partners through the Coalition for Police Accountability and Transparency so that all of us are safe from law enforcement.

March is Women’s History Month, and we want to highlight five women who made significant contributions to the social justice movement in San Diego and across the border, and brought about much needed change. They are Ashley L. Walker, Delfina Cuero, Irene Perrariz Mena, Dr. Shirley Weber, and Gracia Molina Enriquez de Pick.
