Yvette’s committed to improving the day-to-day lives of her constituents, especially when it comes to issues of safety. That’s why, as part of the $17.7 million in funding that she secured for Brooklyn, $3 million is going to support community-based Cure Violence initiatives.
Cure Violence is a program used by cities around the country that seeks to change community norms about violence and provide pathways out of violent behavior – transforming not just the individuals who enter the program but the well-being of the community as a whole. We’re incredibly optimistic about funding this program: other New York neighborhoods that have adopted it have seen shootings decreased by 63%!
Violence is a community issue – and it’s also intertwined with economic, racial, and gender justice. Low-income communities, people of color, and women are disproportionately affected by violence, and Yvette knows that this investment in the future of Brooklyn is crucial to empowering marginalized folks in our district.
