Hi John,

Over the past two years, North Carolina and the rest of the world have been through a lot. Personally, I expected many challenges as Governor, but a global pandemic was not one of them. But I knew it was my job to lead, and I have done that to the best of my ability.

These last two years are putting a bright light on the fact that quality health care must be accessible to all of us—not just some of us.

I have a few more thoughts to share with you about health care access in our state, but first, you need to know that my Democratic allies and I are working hard to expand Medicaid coverage to include more than 500,000 additional North Carolinians. Unfortunately, Republican legislators have long been blocking our progress.

Now the GOP has drawn districts to try and regain a supermajority in the legislature after our November election. If they achieve that supermajority, we won’t be able to continue our work on the issues—like Medicaid expansion—that matter most.

Partisan gerrymandering is already posing a major challenge to Democrats’ prospects. We all need to stand together to have a shot at blocking a GOP supermajority in November.

Keeping our state safe and healthy is a priority. That starts by making sure folks can pick up their prescriptions or visit the doctor without worrying about breaking the bank.

When people are able to stay up-to-date on essential, preventative care services, their quality of life is improved and chronic disease rates are reduced overall.

Meanwhile, when an unexpected illness does occur, we have to make sure that families are able to cover the cost of a visit to the ER or any necessary treatment.

John, I know that Medicaid expansion is the right path for North Carolina. Studies of states that have already passed expansion have shown positive impacts on health outcomes and health care affordability.

North Carolinians deserve accessible, quality health care. I’ll continue to advocate for Medicaid expansion in Raleigh, but we won’t be able to move the needle if Republicans gain a supermajority. We must elect Democratic leaders who know how crucial Medicaid expansion is.
