John — the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres delivered a bleak sentiment this past week: our global climate goals are “on life support.”
In the wake of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, countries slowly started to switch away from fossil fuels with the goal of avoiding the worst impacts of climate change. But aiming to cap global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels is beginning to seem blissfully naïve.
Secretary General Guterres stated that in order to reach these goals, the world must cut greenhouse gas pollution almost in half by 2030 and completely erase its carbon footprint by 2050.
But just four months after the COP26 Summit in Glasgow, little progress has been made to achieve even the too-modest international pledges that were announced then — including those made by the United States. Without major intervention, we’re “sleepwalking into a climate catastrophe.” The science is clear; we must step up and do our part to prevent the worst climate change impacts from happening.
Even if the international community has taken a pause on considering climate action, the climate crisis has not taken a similar break. In order for the world to wake up, the U.S. needs to lead.
The solutions are out there, but Joe Manchin and Republican members of Congress continue to hold up climate action. The Build Back Better bill included $555 billion to fight climate change, the single largest climate investment in American history. The Senate had a once-in-a-decade opportunity to make a consequential and lasting impact on climate change by passing the bill and sending it to President Biden for his signature, but they blew it.
That’s why our green coalition in the House is so critically important to combating climate change. Tackling climate change must remain a key priority, and we need a Congress that doesn’t fall asleep at the wheel and instead passes legislation that makes a real impact on carbon pollution, both short and long term.
We MUST hit the goals we need to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. But it will take sustained, committed action – the status quo is not enough. SEEC Members are ready to work to ensure a sustainable future. Will you donate today to support this critical work? [[link removed]]
