John,
In the span of four days, the United States (and the state of California specifically) has faced three mass shootings that killed ten people and injured even more. The shootings took place in a high school in Santa Clarita, a home in San Diego, and a backyard party in Fresno.
Sadly, this is the ‘new normal’ in America, as there are more mass shootings than there are days in the year in our country. Let that sink in for a moment… more mass shootings than days in a year! But what’s tragically ironic and infuriating is that the Senate was considering a vote on a bill to finally establish universal background checks on gun purchases -- something 90% of Americans support -- and Republicans blocked it, at the same time students were on lockdown at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita last Thursday.
The Senate GOP has blood on their hands. With every day they refuse to vote on common sense gun reform bills passed by the Democratic House Majority, more lives are lost to these seemingly endless mass shootings.
We cannot allow the Senate to continue doing nothing. Add your name to our petition right now to demand Senate Republicans start passing gun reform bills or face the consequences at the ballot box come 2020.
Trump and Republicans like to call their opponents “do-nothing Democrats,” but the truth is Democrats have already done their jobs to take action on this deadly issue taking the lives of our children and loved ones.
In February, the House passed the universal background checks bill, the most significant gun control legislation since 1994. McConnell put the bill in “legislative limbo” only for it to be blocked last Thursday.
Democrats have also introduced bills to limit the sale of high-capacity magazines and accessories meant to inflict as much damage as quickly as possible, and reintroduced the ban on assault weapons. Once again, Republicans have rejected these basic protections that could literally save lives.
Each day the GOP fails to support common sense gun legislation, more lives are lost. It’s time they were held accountable, and with the 2020 elections coming up, now is the time to build public pressure for action.
Demand the Senate finally take action on gun violence by passing commonsense gun reforms like universal background checks NOW >>
Thanks for working with us on this critical issue,
-Yvette
