Have you been watching the confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson? I’ll admit it’s been a practice in self restraint for me as I watch these Republican Senators treat her so disrespectfully. We are talking about one of the most experienced judges to ever be nominated!
Josh Hawley (a different Josh, I promise), Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham. All of them went after her with such vitriol - walking out of the hearing, asking ridiculous questions, interrupting her. It was hard for me to imagine them treating her with such disrespect if she were a white man.
It’s hearings like this that remind me of what’s at stake for our democracy. Confirming a Supreme Court justice is one of the most important jobs the Senate has. And yet we have Republican Senators who view it as their audition tape for Donald Trump or their presidential run. Is that really what our democracy is about? Who can go most viral yelling at the first African American woman nominated to the Supreme Court?
I can only speak for me and my team, but I can tell you that’s not why we do the work. We wake up every morning looking for opportunities to better our community. That’s what service is for us. And, that’s why we’re also under attack by national GOP groups. They know they have to lie about our service in order to win back this purple seat.
If you’re as frustrated as I am watching the confirmation hearings, I hope you’ll consider giving to our campaign before our End of Quarter deadline. We have to stand up to this nastiness and show a different way of governing.
