Over the last several decades, we’ve seen the devastating impact climate change has had on our communities. From the tornados triggered by Tropical Storm Frances in 2004 to the record breaking floods of 2015, our climate is destabilizing, and the people of South Carolina are paying the price.
Charleston’s drinking water is among the worst in the nation. People across the Midlands and the Lowcountry are berated by devastating “once-in-a-generation” weather events year after year, and dangerous heat waves are putting vulnerable South Carolinians at risk. And it’s no secret that impoverished communities and communities of color continue to be hit the hardest.
For far too long, South Carolinians have suffered without any action from Republicans. The GOP won't even admit climate change exists, let alone provide support for South Carolinians struggling to recover from these catastrophic events. Consequently, we’re faced with crumbling roads and bridges, water contamination, and other infrastructural challenges that inhibit our state’s economic viability and long term growth. I think you can agree, we can no longer afford their failed leadership on this critical issue.
As Governor, I will make addressing climate change and environmental justice an essential element of my agenda. For me, tackling the climate crisis is about coming together and considering what kind of world we want the next generation of South Carolinians to grow up in. It’s about making sure kids have safe drinking water and that all South Carolina communities are equipped with the infrastructure to withstand these natural disasters. When I say I want to build a South Carolina where everyone thrives, that means building a state that is sustainable generation after generation.
I’m grateful to have you on my team as we take on this crisis.
With gratitude,
Mia
