Dear Friend,

At the start of my career, I didn’t consider the need to fight for freedom of speech. I was always in favor of free speech, but I’d never really thought there was any point in making a big fuss about it—it was like having air to breathe.

I learned from experience that when one’s freedom is challenged, it’s like someone turning off your air supply—an experience too many authors around the world have to face.
As a former president of PEN America and a novelist, I advocate for communities and countries that allow writers to express themselves freely and exchange all ideas. That is why I support PEN America.

Will you join me by making a donation so writers have the freedom to write?
