Dear Friend,
The U.S. Postal Service inspector general just released a report saying
that 99% of mail routes should be transferred to electric vehicles.^1
But Postmaster General Louis DeJoy—a holdover from the Trump years—is
STILL moving forward with spending billions of dollars buying a fleet of
165,000 gas-guzzling trucks that will pour greenhouse gases into the
atmosphere for decades to come.^2 Worse yet, with skyrocketing gas prices,
these trucks will be a massive waste of taxpayer dollars.
It’s past time to transition the USPS to green, electric vehicles. But if
DeJoy gets away with buying this fleet of gas guzzlers, we’ll be living
with the cost and pollution for a generation.
Thanks to the work of Demand Progress members and our allies, there is now
widespread awareness that Louis DeJoy is a corrupt Trump crony who should
be fired. Now, with your help, we can help push more letters demanding
that Congress block this sweetheart deal to a polluting industry.

President Biden has an executive order in place directing that by 2030,
half of all new vehicles purchased by the government be zero emissions.^3
The USPS fleet is out of date and in dire need of an upgrade, giving the
agency the perfect chance to fulfill the executive order, but DeJoy made a
deal to buy gas-guzzling trucks that get as little as 8 miles per gallon
instead.^4
To make matters worse, Oshkosh Defense, the government contractor that got
the deal for the trucks, promised to provide 1,000 union jobs, but then
transferred the work to a non-union state.^5
DeJoy has given the Biden administration and Congress every reason to step
in and overrule this purchase. Not only is there Oshkosh’s employment
bait-and-switch, but DeJoy’s report on the vehicles estimated a gas
efficiency three times better than what the Environmental Protection
Agency indicates.^6 Given DeJoy’s unethical history, this deal must be
stopped.
And with millions of Americans already angry about gas prices, they will
be absolutely infuriated to learn that DeJoy wants to spend billions on
gas guzzlers instead of efficient electric vehicles.
It’s up to us to sound the alarm through our massive online following and
make so much noise the White House and Congress can’t ignore us.
Demand Progress already helped to pass the U.S. Postal Service Reform Act.
Now we are activating our 1 million-plus membership to insist that DeJoy’s
deal be blocked and the USPS fleet be electrified, and we’re not letting
up.

deal!
