John,
As a Montana native, I understand the value of preserving working forests for the communities of northwest Montana and cherish the ability to access these lands. The work that we are undertaking here to protect 114,000 acres as part of the Montana Great Outdoors Project is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that would ensure permanent public access.
However, the longer it takes to complete this project, the more expensive it gets. That is why time is of the essence, and your help is critical to our success in preserving public access to these Montana wildlands. We’ve been making steady progress over the past two years and are 88% to our fundraising goal to keep this land open to the public.
Will you join Trust for Public Land and help us close the gap in this final stretch by making a tax-deductible contribution today, to support this and our many other critical conservation projects around the nation?
Since the pandemic began, this land has become almost too popular for its own good. A relatively uncrowded recreation mecca for decades, tourists have been flocking to northwest Montana in record numbers in recent years. The national forests are in great demand, and the state park—which is adjacent to six miles of the land we seek to protect—saw a 40% increase in visitation year-over-year in 2021.
The rural setting and new remote working opportunities have also resulted in record numbers of new residents moving to this part of Montana from urban areas across the country, making it even more important that we protect these treasured places for all to enjoy.
Can we count on you to help put this vital project over the finish line by joining Trust for Public Land and
making a tax-deductible contribution right now?
If we can finish this massive project, we will have saved an area that is half the size of Grand Teton National Park! This nearly 200-square mile landscape is filled with deep forests and crystal blue lakes and will be available to residents and visitors to hike, bike, fish, and even pick berries. And upon completion, we will also have protected 207 miles of streams, 896 acres of riparian habitat, and 2,065 acres of wetlands. It will also be a huge, needed boost for the local economy.
Completing the Montana Great Outdoors Project will also greatly advance our aggressive five-year goal to protect one million acres of land, 1,000 miles of rivers and streams, and connect or build 1,000 miles of trails across America by 2025.
So please help us finish this vitally important project and our many other efforts across the nation by making a tax-deductible membership contribution today.
Sincerely,
Dick Dolan
Northern Rockies Director
