Workers at Movement Crystal City (formerly Earth Treks) are likely to become the nation’s first unionized climbing gym after the NLRB issued a final ruling on Monday. Movement workers had voted 28 - 14 in favor of unionization last fall, but the company filed several objections, all of which have now been dismissed. “As skilled employees who build the culture and member experience our gym is known for, we want a union to ensure we have a voice on decisions that impact our community,” said organizer Wendy Low. “We are so excited to come to the bargaining table in good faith and use our voice.” Movement, now owned by El Cap, is the largest chain of climbing gyms in the country. No word yet on whether they’ll appeal the Board’s ruling and further delay the process.
Tune in on WPFW’s Your Rights At Work labor radio show this Thursday, when Movement organizer Gus Mason will be a guest. |
Domestic Workers Bill of Rights proposed in DC
Few workers are at greater risk of exploitation than domestic workers. Nannies, au pairs, house cleaners, home health aides – all too often these workers work alone under the supervision of their employer, and under informal and precarious work arrangements. Sexual harassment and wage theft are frequent occurrences. To make matters worse, they have historically been excluded from coverage under labor and employment laws. That may be about to change in Washington DC. On Tuesday, March 15, DC Councilmember Elissa Silverman announced release of the DC Domestic Workers Employment Rights Amendment Act. Read more here.

| ATU makes donation to ITUC Ukrainian refugee relief effort
The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) today announced a donation of $25,000 to the International Trade Union Confederation Relief Fund to provide immediate support to Ukrainian refugees.
“We are beyond inspired by the strength and courage of the Ukrainian people bravely defending their country in this war with Russia,” said ATU International President John Costa. “Many Ukrainian civilians have tragically lost their lives. Families have been torn apart and forced to flee their homes amid the destruction and violence of the war. We are hopeful that this donation for the millions of refugees will help those most in need of care.”
