How to start a conversation with friends and family

Hello John,

Do you ever feel awkward about how to talk to friends and family about the climate and ecological emergency?

Maybe you thought you should know all the science in detail first, or that you need to nail the perfect argument?

But the truth is we don’t need to be experts to have a good conversation. We just need to ask questions, to listen and be respectful of where people are at, and then tell our own story - why we are involved with XR and why it matters to us.

All of us are deeply influenced by the people who are important to us. These personal conversations are the ones that really move people. Here are three ways to start a conversation.

1. The Talk
Our “Heading for Extinction and what to do about it” talk explains the dire situation we’re in, how Extinction Rebellion intends to bring about change, and vitally, our individual journeys towards taking action.
Invite your friends to register on zoom.

2. The Book
Birmingham XR rebel and physicist Dr Louis Keal has written a ‘climate gift book’ explicitly for activists to give to the people they know, to start these vital conversations. The pdf is available for free.

3. The Quiz
The Crisis Quiz, consisting of eight questions, is a fun way to engage people. Challenge your friends to beat your score!

Who will you start a conversation with?
You might just change their life.
