Despite being one of the most qualified nominees to the Supreme Court in history, Republican Senators have relentlessly attacked Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson this week for all kinds of ridiculous reasons. They’ve questioned her faith, injected critical race theory, even criticized her time as a public defender.
As a former public defender myself, that line of attack is so disappointing. Judge Jackson would be the first federal public defender on the Supreme Court, and we need that perspective. But we need to fight by her side against these ridiculous GOP attacks. That’s why I’m asking you to add your name to support Judge Jackson’s nomination right away.
I represented low-income clients as a public defender in Vermont. Our justice system is built on the right to counsel, and public defenders are crucial to leveling the playing field for those who can’t afford defense attorneys. Attacking Judge Jackson for serving the public—when she could have taken a far more lucrative job—is baseless.
I’ve known Patrick Leahy for a long time and he’s not one to get riled up easily. But even he called Republicans’ line of questioning outrageous and said he’s never seen behavior like this in his nearly five decades in the Senate.
We can’t let partisan politics get in the way of her confirmation. She would be an incredible justice and we need to do everything in our power to beat back the out-of-line attacks.
