My friends,
If Ketanji Brown Jackson is confirmed to the Supreme Court, she will not only be the first Black woman on the highest court in the land — which is HISTORIC — but for many of us in the justice community, her appointment is so exciting because she is also a former public defender.
America’s courts have been missing an absolutely ESSENTIAL type of legal diversity. I am ALL for an ethnic and gender diversity, John. But surface level representation does not protect us from harm.
The majority of federal judges have been career prosecutors who see through a lens of mass incarceration.
But when you’re a public defender, this MASSIVELY changes how you view what justice looks like. Public defenders most often represent Black and brown people, people experiencing homelessness, people experiencing substance misuse and people going through cycles of poverty.
This is why at Real Justice, we’ve worked so hard to recruit, vet, and support public defenders running for local district attorney positions. But we also need this perspective in the highest court in the land.
DEMAND THE SENATE CONFIRM KETANJI BROWN JACKSON
My friends, I feel very, VERY good about this appointment. While I have 101 (and more) strong critiques against Joe Biden and how he has failed to deliver on many of his promises to us, this gives me hope.
He is appointing so many public defenders to lower courts — and having someone like Ketanji Brown Jackson on the Supreme Court would be an enormous victory.
I can’t wait to celebrate her appointment with all of you — and then continue our work to transform our justice system all across the country.
Love and appreciate you,
Shaun
