I just got turned away at the doors of the Homestead detention center. Senator Kamala Harris, Secretary Julian Castro, Governor John Hickenlooper, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Mayor Pete Buttigieg and I all went to their facility and requested access -- and we were denied. Legally, I have a right to enter and while I regularly request entry, I’m often denied. What is the Trump Administration hiding?

Their shame.

We need to close the Homestead detention center once and for all. Add your name if you agree.

Debbie Homestead

Who are we as a country to put nearly 3,000 children behind fences, in prison-like conditions, keeping them there for days, weeks, months. Many have family waiting for them in America, but they have not been reunited yet. Why?

Corruption.

As immigrants from Latin America, we know what corruption looks like. And that is what is happening at Homestead -- a company profiting off of nearly 3,000 children, $2 million a day, of TAXPAYER money.

This cannot go on. This cruel, inhumane and tragic treatment of immigrants is not who we are as a nation. We cannot stand by and allow children to be separated and detained from their families.

And we can’t allow this political corruption to continue. Former White House Chief of Staff, John Kelly, and his wealthy friends are profiting off of these centers. Can you imagine? They’re making a profit off of forcing innocent children to suffer!

I will continue to fight to get this abhorrent detention center to close down. Will you join me by adding your name to my petition to close Homestead?

Thank you,
Debbie Mucarsel-Powell
