Twelve years ago I was fortunate to be a part of history. I was in
the middle of my second term representing the people of Georgia’s
4th District in Congress. And on this day 12 years ago, President
Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, extending
access to health care to tens of millions of Americans.
I even received one of the signing pens as proof of all the hard
work we put in to make this happen.
It was a landmark bill, passed solely by Democrats, and
spearheaded by our nation’s first Black President and first woman
Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. Back then, Democrats not
only controlled the House, but also had enough votes in the Senate
to overcome a filibuster and enact the ACA. That’s what happens
when Democrats have large majorities – we get real work done and
bring about true reform for the American people. Will you make a

Despite that accomplishment and all the good things that have
come from it, one of the memories that has seared itself into my
mind from the days leading up to the ACA’s enactment was when
the great Congressman John Lewis – an icon not just in Georgia
but around the world – was cursed at and spit on by Tea Party
protesters as he went to cast his vote in favor of the bill.
Here was a man who had literally bled for freedom decades before,
being ridiculed and dehumanized in 2010 by the very people he was
trying to help. The Tea Party morphed into an ever more radical
movement. Today, some of them are insurrectionists. But if he were
here today, John Lewis would be the first to point out that even
insurrectionists need health care.
As we look ahead to the midterms, I’m worried about what I’m hearing
from Republicans. Senator Ron Johnson has said that if the GOP
takes control of Congress, they will try again to repeal the ACA. Like I
said, I’m worried. But I’m not surprised. They’ve been trying to undo
the protections of the ACA for 12 years.
Republicans don’t have a better plan. They don’t even have any plan
to replace the ACA. They just want it gone, no matter how many
millions of Americans will lose health insurance as a result. We can’t
let that happen. Will you stand with me to defend the Affordable Care
Act and the progress we’ve made over the last twelve years by making
