Oi Friend, I’d like to tell you a story about my tia (aunt), Izaura.
This Womxn History Month, I am celebrating her. My tia shows her love for my fam and I through cooking. She knows my favorite dish: ground beef with a side of polenta. 🥘 Which in Portuguese we call: “carne moída com angu.” When it’s ready, she’ll call me: “Mah, seu prato preferido está pronto” (your favorite dish is ready). And still to this day, I’ll run to the cozinha (kitchen) like an excited menininha (little girl) when she calls me.
In our latest project, 'Immigrant Made' Zine, one of the lovely artists’ Jasmine, wrote a short story that captures the special connection I have with my aunt. 💜
This Womxn history month, I invite you to read Jasmine’s short story along with other amazing pieces by womxn artists who contributed to our Zine ‘Immigrant Made.’
Cooking is her love language. Feeling sad? Chocolate is nature’s mood booster. Feeling stressed? Here’s a plate of colorful fruits to relax. Feeling angry? Here you go mi amor, a nice bowl of chicken soup to calm the soul. There is no pain or worry that can’t be solved with her food. I treasure every bite, savoring it.
