Supporter,
Did you hear the message from Rev. Michael Woolf, Senior Minister, Lake Street Church of Evanston from last Saturday? At the culminating protest for our 5 week launch of the #OUTNOW Movement, he said:
"As I have watched impeachment hearings this week, I have been struck by the fact that we are endlessly focused on whether a United States president practiced too forcefully the imperialist policies of domination that have been our way of operating since the beginning of our country. We have not been focused on what I would term the spiritual sickness of our society. Any society that permits human beings to be placed in cages, denies fair asylum claims, or practices cuts to SNAP benefits that hurt our most vulnerable is sick. Too often people of good will mistake cruelty to be an unfortunate side effect of policies, but we must awaken to the fact that cruelty is the point of these policies - it is not a bug; it is a feature of our states programming.
When spiritual sickness and cruelty dominate, it becomes clear that those at the top must be removed from office. Whether or not Democrats can convince their congressional peers that Trump must be removed, our moral and ethical compasses demand his removal. The impeachment process skips over the fundamental fact that he is already impeachable through public acts that we all have seen. A 7 year old could see that he is impeachable. But it is impossible to see what you are being paid not to see. That’s why it’s up to us, and why I support Refuse Fascism and our efforts to remove our president from office. Otherwise, I fear we will not be able to address the spiritual rot at the center of this debacle."
The challenge Rev Woolf poses is one that we all -- from our divergent political and religious (or non-religious) viewpoints -- must take to heart. Only if the people act from below can anything good come from the current crisis unfolding in the ruling halls of society.
This is why our mission is to move millions into the street with us to create the kind of political crisis that forces the removal of this regime from power, not waiting til 2020, not hoping that impeachment will handle it for us, but taking this responsibility ourselves. This week, we're asking you to be part of making plans to bring many more into the streets, inspired by the example set by #OutNOW so far.
Join in the next steps.
Be part of mass meetings Sunday November 24 where we will work together on confronting how fascism is being consolidated -- and accepted -- every day that the Trump/Pence regime remains; how to overcome the obstacles and arguments others make against taking to the streets; and join in making plans for December Disruptions of business as usual. Find the meetings below.
Join the conversation at the Wednesday #OutNOW Webinar 9:00 pm EST 6:00 pm PST
Weekly webinars feature RefuseFascism.org leaders and organizers grappling with the big questions of the movement. How do we overcome fear, passivity, and peoples' failure to recognize that the normal political process they think will stop fascism, will not, and get them involved in the one thing that will: mass, sustained, non-violent protest?
