In one of the most extreme cases, Florida Republicans are attempting to ban conversations about sexual orientation or gender identity in elementary school classrooms with the passage of the "Don't Say Gay" bill.

Important voices, stories, and histories of our nation stand to be minimized or even erased, all while driving home a message of alienation and shame towards our LGBTQ+ students.

In the last month alone, Republicans across the country have introduced over 15 bills that aim to restrict and even penalize conversations about gender and sexual orientation.

Even as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, it is clear we are also facing an epidemic of hate and discrimination that lurks within our own democracy.
