John,
12 years ago today, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law. Democrats helped make history and expand health care access for millions of Americans across the country, including substance use treatment and protections for pre-existing conditions.
But in 2017, Paul LePage made history in his own way when he blocked a Medicaid expansion even after a referendum where a majority of Mainers voted for it. He didn’t stop there. LePage said he would rather “go to jail,” than use federal money to expand Medicaid to Mainers who otherwise could not afford health insurance.
Thankfully, Gov. Mills is a champion for affordable health care in Maine and wasted no time undoing Paul LePage’s damage. On her first day in office, she expanded Medicaid, providing health care to nearly 90,000 Mainers.
Gov. Mills has continued to fight for affordable high-quality health care throughout her time as governor, signing legislation on everything from improved dental coverage for low-income Mainers to expanded access to telehealth services.
Thank you,
Gaetan
