People For Supporter – If you weren’t able to watch Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s hearing yesterday, allow us to summarize the highlights – or lowlights, as the case may be – for you. Unfortunately, since they had so little substance on which to attack Judge Jackson, several far-right senators resorted to bad-faith, baseless smears that seemed simply designed to push hot-button, divisive allegations instead of actually evaluating her qualifications. For example, Senator Cruz of Texas spent most of his allotted time trying to tie Judge Jackson to the favorite far-right boogeyman of critical race theory, despite her obvious explanation that it’s an academic theory taught at the graduate school level that has never come up in her work as a judge. Senator Graham of South Carolina tried the “guilt by association” angle to attack Judge Jackson for her work as a public defender on behalf of detainees at Guantanamo Bay; when contradicted by Senator Durbin, Graham launched into a heated tirade and then stormed out of the hearing room. Senator Blackburn of Tennessee – who earlier this year characterized another Black judicial nominee’s three speeding citations more than ten years ago as a “rap sheet” – claimed that Judge Jackson had given a lecture saying critical race theory should be considered by judges in making decisions on the bench, a claim immediately rated by PolitiFact as “false.” And Senator Hawley of Missouri continued his attempts to paint Judge Jackson as soft on child pornography offenders – attacks that even the conservative National Review have derided as “meritless to the point of demagoguery.” Here at People For, we’ve been fighting for a judicial system that protects the rights of ALL Americans, not just the wealthy and well-connected, for more than 40 years. And we’re deeply concerned – we hope you are too – at the prospect of these far-right legislators gaining a majority in the Senate this fall, and shutting down all the progress President Biden has made in rebalancing the federal judiciary since he took office last year. People For doesn’t have secretive billionaire donors; we rely on a network of more than a million activists and supporters just like you – who believe in courts that are fair, just, and work for all of us. We’re one of the lead organizations in the broad coalition fighting to confirm Judge Jackson, and are fighting hard these days to educate the public and organize pressure on senators on both sides of the aisle to confirm her without delay. We appreciate your support; with your help, we’ll make history and get this extremely qualified nominee confirmed to the Supreme Court. Sincerely, Ben Jealous, President
