Damon Chetson is fighting to end the death penalty, the prosecution of
marijuana offenses and the pay-to-play justice system that directly
criminalizes poverty in Wake County. He will also implement a drivers’
license restoration program that will allow people who have had their
licenses suspended due to extremely high fees to resume the use of their
licenses, as well as focusing on the expungements for those who have had
convictions and struggled to be employed due to their records. He is
running against an incumbent who is a well funded, pro-cop,
pro-criminalization DA, and we are so proud to back him in this fight.
Santana Deberry has led the way on transformative justice as Durham’s
District Attorney and is running for reelection to continue that
life-saving work. She has focused on reducing the incarceration rate —
which is down 25% compared to where it was in 2018! Santana also
successfully petitioned the court to expunge more than 3,000 charges
brought against 16 and 17 year olds, who were prosecuted as adults prior
to North Carolina raising the the age of who could be charged as a
juvenile in 2019.
Tim Emry is running for Mecklenberg District Attorney to hold police
accountable when they break the law, end mass incarceration policies,
focus on racial and restorative justice, and has promised to never seek
the death penalty in a case. Tim understands that the criminal justice
system isn’t broken, it’s working exactly as it was designed. He is
currently on the team of lawyers suing the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police
Department for kettling and gassing demonstrators who were protesting in
the aftermath of the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. He’s
running against a current DA who has used the same failed tough-on-crime
policies that harm public safety and increase incarceration rates of Black
and brown people in North Carolina.
Brian Decker is running for Washington County District Attorney in Oregon
and understands that we must address the root causes of crime that we see
in cycles of addiction, poverty, homelessness, and those struggling with
their mental health. He is running to ensure true public safety and
accountability, prioritizing prevention of crime rather than criminalizing
our communities, better serving victims of violent crime, and reducing
unjust sentences and harsh plea deals. The current DA has repeatedly used
policies that cause cycles of immense harm rather than investing in
policies and community services that support the people of Washington
County.
Kimberly Graham has represented low income defendants in the criminal and
juvenile courts in central Iowa for over 20 years. For the past 4 years,
she's been the attorney for kids of participants in the Polk County
Recovery Court program, listening to young people and advocating for them
when they have been removed from their home. As Polk County Attorney, she
will use her advocacy skills and experience representing both adults and
kids to reform the justice system for Polk County's nearly half a million
residents.
Ozzie Fumo is a criminal defense attorney with 26 years of experience
fighting for his clients in Clark County. Ozzie was elected to the Nevada
State Assembly in 2016 and 2018, and he introduced legislation to abolish
the death penalty, reform cash bail, and diversify our juries. He is an
Adjunct Professor at Boyd Law School in Las Vegas, and was named the 2021
Adjunct Professor of the Year. Ozzie Fumo is running for Clark County
District Attorney to keep our community safe, end mass incarceration, and
guarantee equal justice for all.
John,
here’s the short of it: These
candidates are the real deal and we need to organize NOW to make sure they
can win. Their primaries are in May and June — which means we don’t have
much time to make it happen.
[ [link removed] ]Split a contribution between their campaigns today so we can help them
organize their communities, get out the vote, and win in May and June.
We’re building the bench for transformative justice all over the country
and we need your help to keep up the fight!!
Lastly, please stay up to date with all of our latest endorsements by
