My work requires a lot of travel to many different parts of the country, so I wasn’t sure how to get involved. Leading up to the 2018 midterms, I wanted to volunteer no matter where I was, so I would visit swingleft.org to find local canvassing opportunities—whether I was in New York City, New Jersey, North Carolina, or anywhere else. It only took seconds to find door knocking opportunities nearby. Canvassing was a simple, low pressure volunteer activity that I could do anywhere, and being involved in the work to elect Democrats across the country was incredibly rewarding, especially when we took back the House.
Flash forward five years, and I’m now a Regional Organizing Coordinator with Swing Left and my job is to mobilize and organize volunteers in the southeast to contact voters and encourage them to vote for Democrats.
The stakes are high in this year’s midterms, with the increasingly radical Republican party attempting to prevent needed progress and dismantle our democracy. Trying to find effective ways to get involved to elect Democrats on your own can be overwhelming, but Swing Left makes it easy to find the most competitive races where winning will help secure Democratic majorities. You can use Swing Left’s tools the way I did, to make a difference in a way that works best for you.
So, whether you’re feeling anxious or hopeful (or a little bit of both) about the upcoming elections, I hope you’ll join me in taking action—virtually or in person, in a Swing District near you—to win the midterms and strengthen our democracy.
