For the first time since the Voting Rights Act was signed, the nation’s congressional map is on track to be balanced between both parties.
A Potential Rarity in American Politics: A Fair Congressional Map
This year’s congressional map, despite continued gerrymandering, is poised to have a nearly equal number of districts that lean Democratic and Republican.
So what does this mean?
Well like the New York Times noted, it does not negate the blatant partisan gerrymandering in some states. We see it in maps in Texas and Georgia -- and the fact that Alabama’s congressional map discriminates against Black voters.
But it does mark progress. Here’s why.
“With redistricting complete in all but five states, Democrats have erased much of a huge partisan advantage that Republicans had amassed on the House of Representatives map by dominating the last round of redistricting in 2011. Democrats have also rolled back some of the Republican gerrymanders that have allowed the party to dominate state legislatures.”
This is a big win and a testament to the impacts of this grassroots movement to end gerrymandering. But as President Obama said, the fight for fair maps is not over.
"Even in states where maps were deemed final, voters have sent map drawers back to the drawing board." -- President Obama
