The latest polls in the Texas Governor’s race show Beto narrowing the gap
and quickly catching up to Greg Abbott. It's great news, but it doesn't
tell the whole story.
In a moment I'll explain more, but first I have to ask: [ [link removed] ]Would you
consider chipping in $3 or more today to our people-powered
movement to elect Beto and end Abbott's failed time in office?
The truth is, polls only capture a snapshot of the population, in a moment
of time. They aren't a 100% accurate predictor of how a race will turn
out. And as we've all seen before, they can be off.
Case in point: Beto's 2018 Senate run against Ted Cruz where we came
closer to winning statewide than any Democrat had in decades. Before the
election, Cruz was polling on average 6.8 points ahead of Beto. But on
Election Day, Beto came within 2.6 points of winning.
Our people-powered movement shocked the country. Pollsters and pundits
didn't know what to make of the fact that over 3 million more voters came
out in 2018 compared to the 2014 midterms — and that Beto not only
received votes from Democrats but also first-time voters, Independents,
and Republicans.
John, the
bottom line is that polls, like a recent one that showed Beto and Abbott
in a single-digit race, are one great validator that we can win this race.
But they can't tell you about the historic and unifying momentum we're
seeing grow across the state, across communities, and across party lines.
Beto's been on the road traveling this past month, and we've seen it with
our own eyes: We're building a one-of-a-kind grassroots coalition that's
capable of defying expectations and changing the status quo in Texas.
We have what it takes to elect a real fighter for the people of Texas as
our next Governor. By working together, we can keep closing the gaps in
polling, shock the pundits on Election Day, and defeat Abbott once and for
all.
