How much of a difference can trees make in a city? You might be surprised.

Cleaner air. Cleaner water. Cooler temperatures. Flood prevention. Even benefits for local businesses.

In a new episode of Building the Future, we look at trees as critical infrastructure in cities, and show how innovative efforts are bringing new trees to neighborhoods that can benefit the most.

Trees have always been an important part of the urban landscape. Now we have data to show just how valuable they are, and where new trees can make the biggest difference.

Bloomberg Associates -- which provides pro-bono support to city leaders tackling complex municipal challenges -- is right now working with officials in Chicago and Milan on equitable tree projects that target tree-planting and maintenance in neighborhoods where they can have the biggest impact on public health and the economy. Both cities will plant more than 15,000 trees this year.

And because more trees means less carbon pollution in the atmosphere, planting trees in city neighborhoods is a great way to advance an important climate solution for the planet.
