Breaking: The People Disclose

The Unmasking Fidelity coalition just released “The People Disclose”, a new report exposing how Fidelity Charitable, the nation’s largest grantmaker, has enabled anti-Muslim, anti-LGBTQ, and anti-immigrants groups to be funded to the tune of millions of dollars over the past five years.

The report details how 10 organizations that further systemic oppression globally receive direct contributions from Fidelity Charitable through its Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs).

Read the report now.

Back in the fall of 2021, dozens of organizations and thousands of individuals, including hundreds of RGers, demanded Fidelity Charitable disclose its contributions to these groups, plus the related fees and policies related to this practice.

Coalition members, including RG Boston and NC Triangle leaders, delivered the letter to Fidelity headquarters in Boston, MA and Raleigh, NC.

They have ignored us.

And so now the people must disclose.

The groups highlighted in the report include:

  • Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian right-wing legal organization behind prominent anti-LGBQT lawsuits and laws criminalizing homosexuality across the globe;
  • David Horowitz Freedom Center, which popularizes Islamophobia narratives through projects like “Jihad Watch” in order to support anti-Muslim policies;
  • Central Fund for Israel, which helps build illegal Israeli settlements on stolen Palestinian land.

In total these 10 organizations received over $35 million from Fidelity Charitable since 2016.

Here are 3 things you can do now:

  1. Read the report and share it with your networks and Fidelity account representatives using the social media toolkit.
  2. Join our action hour on Tuesday, March 29 at 12pm-1pm ET / 9am-10am PT.
  3. Sign up for campaign email list so you can take action as the campaign move from the DISCLOSE phase of this campaign to focusing on the DIVEST and REPAIR demands.

The report argues that by allowing donations to such organizations Fidelity Charitable belies its own stated values and that it’s in their power to make a different choice and set an example for other philanthropic institutions.

It also lays out that this problem extends beyond organizations formally recognized as “hate groups.” We have to tackle the structural nature of the problem - this is not only about Fidelity Charitable making contributions to groups that spread hateful ideologies, but the direct complicity of these organizations in entrenching systemic oppression globally.

Fidelity Charitable has defended its actions on the ground that “Fidelity Charitable is cause-neutral.”

We will not let them hide behind this excuse while they funnel millions of dollars through DAFs that actively harm communities across the globe.

The Unmasking Fidelity coalition is anchored by six local and national organizations: ACRE, Asian American Resource Workshop, Community Labor United, Muslim Justice League, Political Research Associates, and Resource Generation.
