‘We Are Being Hunted’

  • Last week, thousands of people across the country marked the one-year anniversary of the Atlanta spa shootings with quiet remembrance, mourning, and marches. The somber occasion also served as a reminder of how much — and how little — has changed in the fight to protect our communities.
  • OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates' Thu Nguyen and Roland Hwang spoke to The 19th about the history of anti-Asian hate in the U.S. and what policymakers need to do as incidents continue to rise. We also highlighted that Asian American women and elders continue to face disproportionate violence, as seen with the appalling assault in Yonkers, New York.
  • OCA National Center also joined with Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta and more than 400 organizations in calling for further action from elected officials, including investments in violence prevention programs and increased access to mental health and housing resources, among other proactive measures.

POLICY CORNER

Affordable Connectivity Program — Ethnic Media Webinar

The Infrastructure and Jobs Act, signed by President Biden on November 15, 2021, established the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). The ACP's funding of $14.2 billion will modify and extend the Emergency Benefit Broadband Program (EBB) and helps connect families and households struggling to afford internet services — ensuring they can access the broadband needed for work, school, healthcare and more.

  • 🤔 Why you should care: We want to make sure our communities take advantage of this federal program and information about the ACP reaches as many households as possible.
  • 💻 Get involved: The Asian American Tech Table will be coordinating an Ethnic Media ACP Training in April (details coming soon). If you have ethnic media in your local community that would benefit from attending this webinar, please email their contacts to OCA's Associate Manager of Policy & Advocacy Michael Nguyen.
