Dear John,
Earlier this month, Republican state legislators in Missouri introduced a Texas-style anti-abortion bill that empowers citizens to sue anyone who performs an abortion or helps someone obtain one -- even if they go out of state.
And Tennessee legislators just introduced an even more egregious bill, which would allow rapists’ families and friends to sue those who help the victim obtain an abortion, or the abortion provider themselves.
Make no mistake: these abortion bans are not "pro-life." They're inhumane. And they’re exacerbating poverty and inequality.
Our latest video explains how these draconian bans worsen existing inequalities and put the health and economic stability of low-income people, especially people of color, at risk.
Let’s be clear: there is nothing "pro-life" about forced pregnancy and forced birth.
When people are forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term, they’re more likely to live below the poverty line, less likely to have full-time work, and more likely to receive public assistance. These bans are pro-poverty, plain and simple.
The freedom to choose when, how, and with whom you start a family should not be dictated by your income or where you live.
Congress must act to protect reproductive freedom, now, before it’s too late.
Thanks for watching,
Robert Reich
