Hi John,

We’re at the Treasury and we’ve given it a green makeover to let Chancellor Rishi Sunak know that the only way to get off gas and tackle soaring energy bills right now, is to boost renewables and make our homes greener.

We can’t keep paying soaring energy bills, funding Putin’s war machine and fuelling the climate crisis for almost three decades while we wait for new North Sea oil and gas. We need solutions now. Can you show Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak an image of what they’ll look like in 2050, when new North Sea oil and gas licences start delivering [1], and let them know we have green solutions ready now?

The UK is on track to spend £2billion on Russian gas imports this year alone - this is funding Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. [2] While the government has announced a phaseout of Russian oil by next year and committed to deal with gas, that's still months of funding for Putin’s war chest. Plus what they hope to fill the energy gap with won’t tackle soaring energy bills and the climate emergency either.

Research shows that if we give greater funding for renewable energy and make our homes greener, we can eliminate our need for Russian gas this year, and save people money on their bills. [4] New North Sea oil and gas is not the answer, we can’t wait till 2050, and it doesn’t tackle high energy prices.

Tomorrow, Rishi Sunak is announcing the Spring Statement. We’ve heard that it doesn’t provide any support for two of the quickest, and most effective solutions to get us off Russian gas and save households money on energy bills. That’s why we’re at the Treasury today. Activists have given it a green makeover with solar panels and insulation to tell Rishi to invest in green homes.

Can you help get our message across to Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson? Can you show them what they’ll look like in 2050, when new North Sea oil and gas licences start delivering, and let them know we have green solutions ready now?

For the past few weeks the government has been under pressure to act over their funding of Putin’s war and the cost of living crisis. Unfortunately, things are only going to get worse for normal people just trying to heat their homes. On the 1st of April, bills will dramatically rise and the pressure on the government will only rise as a result. But many can’t wait for the government to drag their feet and act - make sure you tell them to act now.

Thank you for everything you do,

Anthony and the Energy team
