Liz WillenDear reader,

At The Hechinger Report, we’re committed to writing about solutions in education, which are more urgent than ever in these turbulent times. That’s why I encourage you to read about an elementary school in San Francisco that started an overnight shelter for homeless families, perhaps the first modern public elementary to do so. It’s a story still tugging at my heart, in part because the compassion and empathy from school administrators is helping students perform better in class. We also bring you a story about a strategy some school districts are trying to help parents instantly learn more about what’s going on in their schools: text message translations. Let us know what is working in your communities – we love to hear from readers.

In addition, we are continuing our Hidden Debt Trap series on obstacles that prevent students from graduating. Turns out, overdue tuition and fees – as little as $41 – are derailing hundreds of thousands of college students in California, who are trying to earn degrees during the hardships of the pandemic. Solutions are needed: California community college enrollment plummeted nearly 20 percent during the pandemic, a worrisome trend for colleges in the Golden State. What would help? Please send your ideas our way.
