Last week, I joined a group of my colleagues in sending a letter to the Department of Justice outlining our concerns for insider threats to our democracy and our election systems.

We know that multiple members of the U.S. House right now played a part in inciting and organizing the violent January 6th insurrection, and they continue to spread Trump’s Big Lie.

Yes, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, etc….I’m looking directly at you.

But there is another threat emerging as right-wing extremists and Trump loyalists launch bids for public office in elections offices across the country this year.

There has been a coordinated effort by the right to recruit extremist candidates to run to be election officials. Many of these recruited candidates have made their views and their loyalties to the far right quite clear — and they pose a significant threat to our elections should they be sworn into public office.

We are concerned that this new cohort of election officials may attempt to use their power to sway the outcome of future elections.
