Dear Friend,

Today, we remember 10 people senselessly killed and others forever impacted by a lone gunman at the Table Mesa King Soopers in Boulder. For Boulder and beyond, this tragedy will long remain deeply painful. Our hearts are with the community, the families, and the friends of the victims, including those who survived this attack.

We are indebted to the brave law enforcement officers who heroically responded one year ago. One of them, Officer Eric Talley, lost his life. Officer Talley’s family, friends, and fellow officers live on without him in their lives. He is a hero and will always be remembered, running toward danger to help serve others. Peace officers put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe. Officer Talley, like others who have sacrificed for the rest of us, exemplifies that commitment.

As we collectively process and reflect on this tragedy, gun safety remains a critical priority. In the wake of too many tragedies, we must continue to make progress on this front, and we have. As your Attorney General, I championed and have defended Colorado’s “red flag” law, which allows law enforcement officers or family members to ask a judge to temporarily remove a firearm from a person who poses a significant risk to themselves or others. The law is designed to save lives and it unquestionably has, as we explain in this report [[link removed]] .

To prevent gun violence, we have stood with local law enforcement across Colorado to educate the public on the importance of safe gun storage as a central part of responsible gun ownership [[link removed]] . Safe gun storage keeps firearms from criminals and can prevent teen suicide –the leading cause of death for those between 12-24 years of age.

We have more work to do to protect people and save lives. As your Attorney General, I am committed to learning from tragedies like the one we are remembering today and focusing on what we can do to prevent them.

Phil
