Dataset now available: National Crime Victimization Survey: MSA Public-Use Data, 2000-2015

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has released a National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) dataset on Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. This NCVS data extract contains?

  • a household-based file
  • a person-based file
  • an incident-based file.

These files contain a subset of variables and records from the annual NCVS data files from 2000-2015. The files include records from the 52 MSAs with a 2015 population size of 1 million or more persons and an average annual NCVS sample size of at least 250 persons during the period of 2006-2015. The records included on the MSA data files are not nationally representative of the entire U.S. population age 12 or older. Within each MSA, the household- and person-level weights have been recalibrated so that they are representative of the population of households and persons age 12 or older residing within the MSA for a given year.
