MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS March 15 - 21, 2022 THE WEEK IN BRIEF On Thursday, the U.S. State Department said it approved the potential sale of a $700 million missile defense system to the United Kingdom. The British government seeks to purchase one BMDR and two Command and Control Battle Management and Communications (C2BMC) user nodes. On Friday, Northrop Grumman’s Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS) helped intercept ballistic and cruise missile targets during the Initial Operational Test and Evaluation conducted by the US Army. The system’s “open, modular, and scalable architecture” integrates air and missile sensors with available weapon systems, enabling better firing solutions than current single sensor fire units. Also on Friday, Russian missiles hit the city of Lviv in western Ukraine as Russia steps up its assault on the country more than three weeks after the invasion began. No one was reported killed, but the missiles destroyed an aircraft maintenance facility. On Saturday, Russia claimed to have used a Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missile to strike a munitions warehouse in western Ukraine. As of Monday, The Pentagon is neither confirming nor denying Russia's claims. Additionally, analysis from The Drive's The War Zone, showed Russia's video of the claimed strike was located in eastern Ukraine rather than the Russian claim of western Ukraine. Also on Saturday, Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi group fired missiles and drones at Saudi energy and water desalination facilities, causing a temporary drop in output at a refinery but no casualties. On Sunday, North Korea fired suspected artillery pieces into the sea on Sunday, days after the North’s latest missile launch ended in failure amid the country’s recent burst of weapons testing activity. On Monday, the Biden administration completed the transfer of a significant number of Patriot antimissile interceptors to Saudi Arabia, fulfilling Riyadh’s urgent request for a resupply amid sharp tensions in the relationship. Also on Monday, Slovakia started receiving components of Patriot missile defense systems being deployed from the Netherlands and Germany. The Netherlands is sending one Patriot unit and Germany is sending two Patriot units to strengthen Slovakia's air and missile defenses. Click here to read all of this week's headlines.
