 I invite you to read my recent USA Today op-ed about The Report. The subject of the film, which opened in theaters last weekend, is the Senate Intelligence Committee's quest to uncover the truth about the CIA's post-9/11 torture program. Adam Driver gives a riveting performance as Dan Jones, the lead investigator, and the always superb Annette Bening plays Committee Chair Diane Feinstein.
Nothing is easy about watching torture scenes in a film — especially when it is based on reports of actual torture of real people that were documented in the Senate investigation. The shock is tempered by the film's hope-filled depiction of political staffers like Jones whose belief in democracy is inextricably linked to the need to reveal the truth about a rogue CIA interrogation plan.
I've spent more than two decades working to end torture, and I don't think we've EVER had a better chance to educate the public on the immorality and illegality of torture.
So please add your voice to the national campaign around the film and organize a screening of The Report in your churches, temples, or other centers of worship and community.
