What Chronicles provides is perspectives that have been obscured from public view, or ignored by mainstream media. These are views that confound the official “narratives” and the limited, facile determination of “victims” and “aggressors,” as some would say is the case in this tragic event.
 

Regarding the situation in Ukraine, it is not that any apologists for Putin can effectively condone the brutality of his invasion, or in any way dismiss the cost of his elective war in terms of human life, pain, and suffering.

But the story is not nearly as simple as the media tells it…

If we are to prevent the unnecessary recurrence of such tragedies, or to avoid pitfalls from an intemperate national or global response to it, we need to take time also to develop a fuller appreciation for the forces contributing to this outbreak of violence. These include exploring the serial missteps of European and American leaderships in fomenting the disparate crises that enabled—some would say, invited—Putin to send tanks over the border.

And to this point, we have to consider how the compounding nature of our disgraceful retreat from Afghanistan has damaged America’s global standing. The problem is not only with allies who question the value of the trust placed in us…but also with adversaries who advance their agenda at every expression of American weakness.
