The truth is that Big Oil is generating enormous cash flows from the current crisis while ordinary people pay the price. Last year, companies like ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, and ConocoPhillips all saw their highest annual profits in at least eight years.

Rather than turning record revenues into consumer savings, Big Oil has plowed a fortune into shareholder dividends and lobbyists. They are telling Congress to allow even more access to drilling and fracking on our country's cherished public lands, even as they sit on a decade's worth of unused leases and drilling permits and rake in record profits. They're pushing hard right now because they think they can win.

Expanding drilling would do nothing to decrease today's prices at the pump and would lead to even more climate warming and community-harming pollution — and that's why we cannot allow these lies to go unchallenged. Our latest polling shows that voters have had enough of their price gouging, but the truth is that Big Oil's lies are working — right now voters' concerns about higher gas prices slightly outpace support for investments in renewable domestic energy — but voters do acknowledge that clean energy is a solution.
