Friend -- The Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson begin today, so I wanted to send you a quick note on why this matters.
Supreme Court justices rule on some of the most urgent issues in people's lives, from voting rights to reproductive rights. During her years as a public defender and on the federal bench, Judge Jackson has shown a rigorous commitment to ruling fairly and in accordance with the facts. She'll bring much-needed perspective to the highest court in the land and will be a phenomenal justice.
Judge Jackson clerked for Justice Stephen Breyer -- whose seat on the court she is poised to take -- and is the only Supreme Court nominee to have served as a public defender. The experience she will bring to the court is invaluable.
But this isn't just about her formal qualifications, as vast as they are. This is also about correcting the historic injustice of excluding Black women from the Supreme Court for the last 233 years.
