People For Supporter – As Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's confirmation hearings begin today, the Far Right smear machine – as we expected – is already in full attack mode to try and tear down this highly qualified nominee. Late last week, far-right Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri launched a particularly nasty and baseless attack (one eerily adjacent to the QAnon conspiracy theory) that Judge Jackson is specifically soft on sex offenders and child pornographers.[1] These allegations have, of course, been widely refuted by legal experts on both sides of the aisle ... but that didn't stop Fox News from repeatedly giving Senator Hawley a platform to amplify his smear, including with a guest opinion column TODAY. And it didn't stop Senator Hawley himself from repeating the debunked allegations in his opening statement in today's hearing.
We thank you in advance for any support you can provide today, and we look forward to working with you to confirm Judge Jackson to the Supreme Court. – The Digital Team at People For the American Way ---[original message below]--- Dear People For Supporter, Senate hearings on President Biden’s historic nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court are scheduled to start on Monday. Predictably, as we head into hearings week, we’re seeing a dramatic escalation in both the tone and frequency of the Far Right’s attacks on Judge Jackson. We need your help to fight off these attacks – so can you rush in a renewal donation today to help support our efforts? Judge Jackson, of course, has an impeccable legal career, with a deep and demonstrated commitment to civil rights. She will, without a doubt, be a Justice who will protect the rights of ALL Americans, and will be committed to America’s foundational principles of freedom, equality, and the rule of law. Yet despite her qualifications, the Conservative Action Project – which counts among its members and alumni Ginni Thomas, Kellyanne Conway and Steve Bannon – released a new letter this week calling on Mitch McConnell to simply stop confirming ALL of President Biden’s nominees. Additionally, Carrie Severino of the Judicial Crisis Network – the same dark-money group that poured millions into getting Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch confirmed – resorted to guilt by association, casting the broad coalition of groups supporting the Jackson nomination as “fringe” and “radicals” – simply for supporting such a well-qualified nominee. Here at People For, this is an all-hands-on-deck moment for us. We don’t have secretive billionaire funders like the Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson, so we won’t be able to match the Far Right’s propaganda machine dollar for dollar. What we DO have, however, is a network of more than a million fantastic supporters and members just like you, and a decades-long history of fighting for courts that are fair, just, and work for all of us. And as one of the lead organizations in the broad coalition fighting to confirm Judge Jackson, we have a jam-packed week of actions planned to educate the public and organize pressure on senators to confirm her without delay. Thanks so much for your support, and let’s make history together by getting this extremely qualified nominee confirmed to the Supreme Court. Sincerely, Ben Jealous, President Source: 1.
